The Kominas, a Boston band that originally referred to their sound as “Bollywood Punk” are giving punk music that much needed kick in the ass.

Since forming in 2004, the mostly Muslim punk rock band (one of the four members is Hindu) — along with a handful of similar groups that started around that time under the banner of Taqwacore — has been an irresistible combination for the media. The groups’ satirical and brash lyrics and song titles criticize both fundamentalist Islam and post-Sept. 11 ethnic and religious profiling.

Some songs on The Kominas’ album “Wild Nights in Guantanamo Bay” lean toward the humorous and ironic, including “Suicide Bomb the Gap.” In their song “Sharia Law in the USA,” the lyrics mock the portrayal of Islamists

The band represent just another example of creative youngsters doing what American kids have done for generations: forming bands and making loud music. The fact they are Muslim doesn’t mean there’s some hidden message.
